Google Search Console Setup for Shopify
Google Search Console is the most important free SEO tool for any Shopify store owner - and one of the most underused. It shows you exactly which keywords are driving impressions and clicks to your store, which pages Google has indexed, and which pages have errors preventing them from ranking. Without Search Console, you are optimising blind.
Why This Matters for Your Rankings
Search Console provides the exact keywords Google users type before landing on your pages - data no third-party tool can replicate
Index Coverage reports reveal pages Google has crawled but not indexed, and the specific reason (soft 404, noindex, duplicate, etc.)
Sitemap submission accelerates discovery of new and updated pages, cutting the time from publishing to ranking
URL Inspection tool lets you request re-indexing of any page within seconds of making SEO updates
Common Issues We Find
Search Console not verified
Without verification, you receive zero data about your store's Google performance. Shopify makes DNS verification straightforward but many store owners never complete it.
Sitemap not submitted
Shopify auto-generates a sitemap at yourstore.myshopify.com/sitemap.xml but it must be manually submitted in Search Console for Google to prioritise it.
Critical pages excluded from index
Index Coverage errors like "Submitted URL not indexed" or "Soft 404" on product pages indicate Google is refusing to index your most important pages.
Not monitoring Core Web Vitals report
Search Console's Core Web Vitals report shows real-user data from Chrome - more accurate than Lighthouse for diagnosing speed issues affecting rankings.
Ignoring the Performance report
The Performance report shows your average position for every keyword you rank for. Filtering by position 8-20 reveals dozens of quick-win ranking opportunities.
How SEOScan Detects This
Search Console connection check
We detect whether your Shopify store has Google Search Console verification tags present in the HTML.
Sitemap validation
We fetch and validate your Shopify sitemap.xml to ensure it is well-formed, accessible, and includes all key page types.
Indexability audit
We check your robots.txt and meta robots tags to confirm your key pages are not accidentally blocked from Google indexing.
Verification method detection
We identify which Search Console verification method is in use (HTML tag, DNS, or Google Analytics) to help troubleshoot verification issues.
Sitemap URL accessibility
We verify the sitemap URL is publicly accessible and returns a valid XML response without authentication or redirect issues.
Quick Wins
Actions you can take today - no developer needed.
Verify your Shopify store in Google Search Console using the HTML tag method: Search Console > Add Property > URL prefix > HTML tag. Paste the tag into Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes > Edit code > theme.liquid inside the <head> tag.
Submit your sitemap immediately after verifying. In Search Console, go to Sitemaps and enter "sitemap.xml" (Shopify generates this automatically at your root domain).
Check the Coverage report within 48 hours of verification. Filter by "Error" and prioritise fixing any product or collection pages showing as "Submitted URL not indexed" or "Soft 404".
Set up a weekly habit: open Search Console every Monday, check the Performance report for any significant drops in clicks or impressions compared to the prior week, and investigate the cause.
